mitchellbs@missouri.eduBrief Biography
Barb Mitchell, M.Ed., is the State SWPBS Secondary/Tertiary Consultant,
housed in the College of Education, University of Missouri-Columbia.
Currently, she works collaboratively with RPDC consultants in the Heart
of Missouri, South Central and South East regions supporting school PBS
teams in Tier 2 processes. Barb joined the State PBS team in July 2008
after working as a special education teacher with Columbia Public
Schools in Columbia, Missouri for the past 10 years.
Barb’s initial teaching experience was in special education at the
elementary level. During this time she began working with the Special
Education Department at the University of Missouri to implement
school-wide PBS, served as a member of the PBS leadership team and
assisted in development of universal systems of support for her school.
This included use of data sources, identification of resources and
provision of training in PBS at both the classroom and building level.
Most recently, Barb taught students with Emotional Disorders in a
middle school setting. In addition to classroom responsibilities, she
worked extensively with the school student-assistance team to develop
tier 2 systems of support for children with persistent academic and/or
behavioral concerns. As part of this process, she contributed
technical assistance during weekly team meetings; identified building
resources for sustaining systems of support; provided training for FBA,
behavior intervention plans and effective classroom management to
faculty members; and used data to monitor student and system outcomes.
